Do-it-yourself restoration of an old chest of drawers

Today there is a chest of drawers in almost every home. In addition to being a very beautiful piece of furniture, it is also very functional. After all, you can store so many things in it! The progenitor of the modern chest of drawers was an old Russian chest. It just got a little modified and redesigned. In ancient times, only representatives of a noble family could afford a chest of drawers. After all, back then it was quite expensive. And now it is an indispensable attribute of any room in the house.

Although most often they put a closet in the bedroom - because this is where bedding and other things are stored. If you attach a mirror to the chest of drawers, then it can be a great alternative to a modern dressing table.

What is needed for the restoration of a chest of drawers

In Italy, it is customary before the New Year to change all the furniture in the house, starting the life of a clean slate. But in Russia it is not customary to throw away old furniture, especially if it was inherited from relatives and retained its outwardly attractive appearance. However, over time, even the most durable and reliable furniture can fail and lose its appeal. That's why you have to buy a new one.

As an alternative, you can consider restoring furniture with your own hands. This is especially applicable to the old grandmother's chests of drawers, which are as strong and reliable as the Soviet system. And for this you only need your imagination. And the result will be a completely new designer piece of furniture in your home.

First you need to prepare all the necessary materials and tools:

  • Sander;
  • screwdriver and jigsaw;
  • hacksaw, spatula, hammer;
  • ruler, pencil;
  • roller and several different brushes;
  • MDF board;
  • putty, paint, PVA glue.

Stages of work

When all that is needed is prepared, you can proceed to work. Pull out all the drawers from the chest of drawers, unscrew the old handles. At the next stage of the restoration of the chest of drawers, you need to remove the old varnish and paint. To do this, you will need sandpaper or a grinder.

After the cabinet is cleaned of paint, you need to check the reliability of all furniture fasteners. If there are loose areas or unreliably screwed legs, then they should be disassembled and twisted again, having previously walked through the joints with furniture glue.

Carefully check for chips, scratches and cracks on the surface of the furniture. If they are, then you need to get rid of them. To do this, you need high-quality wood putty. It is applied in a thin layer to fill all the holes and chips in the cabinet. Leave the cabinet to dry. After a few hours, you need to level the surface with a fine sandpaper.

The final step in the restoration of the chest of drawers with your own hands will be priming and drying. After that, you can begin to come up with the external design of furniture restored with your own hands.

Finishing and its options

The restoration of the chest of drawers is moving on to its climax. You can paint the furniture in a color that matches your interior or make it a bright accent in the room. But here you need to have a subtle sense of taste, so as not to make it too pretentious.

From the MDF board with a jigsaw, you need to cut out the decorative lining on the boxes. Carefully sand all corners and side cuts. Apply PVA glue and firmly attach the lining to the boxes. Now it remains to paint the cabinet and varnish it.

By the way, if you use not ordinary, but craquelure varnish, then you will get the effect of aged furniture at home. And you will do everything with your own hands, without resorting to the services of designers.

Now you just have to attach beautiful handles to the drawers and that's it, the restoration of the chest of drawers is finished with brilliance.

After the painted cabinet dries, assemble an unusual collage from the sticker. It can be a lot of fairy-tale characters or scenes from the child's favorite cartoons. It is most convenient to stick all this on a film.

The next step is to transfer all the pictures to the chest of drawers. Apply glue to each picture individually and cover the entire surface of the chest of drawers with them.

    The popularity of hand-made products is growing day by day, including hand-painted furniture. A fascinating activity also brings practical benefits: with the help of painting, old pieces of furniture acquire a second life. But it is not necessary to deal exclusively with restoration. New simple furniture without frills can be turned into a real masterpiece of the interior. The main thing is to choose the right painting technique.

    Design options

    The way furniture is designed depends on professional skills and the time you are willing to spend on creating a masterpiece. For beginners who do not know the art of artistic drawing, it is better to start by using simple stencils. A more complex and interesting painting is obtained by mastering the decoupage technique. In the future, the main composition can be supplemented with small details made independently.

    For masters who use a brush, it is better to try painting furniture using acrylic paints. It will take more time to work, but the freedom of creativity here is not limited to a certain composition. For the first experiments, small pieces of furniture are suitable - a stool, a chair or a shoe shelf. After honing your painting skills, you can move on to larger items - chests of drawers, cabinets.

    Comment! Natural wood furniture is suitable for painting, products based on chipboard or MDF will have to be set aside. The exception is the design of surfaces using decoupage.

    Preparatory stage

    Depending on the technique you choose, you will need:

    • Acrylic paints. You can buy a set or individual shades of the desired volume. The water-resistant image surface is ideal for a wooden base.
    • Brushes. It is recommended to purchase synthetic products or with mixed pile, designed specifically for acrylic formulations. It is better to refuse natural brushes. To work, you will need wide instances that fill the background areas, and thin brushes for drawing small details.
    • Primer. Usually, before starting work, the surface of the furniture is treated for better adhesion with the applied paint layer.
    • Special blends to create certain effects. To give the picture interesting shades, you should use little tricks. Most often, painting is found in the interior of Provence. The provincial design direction actively uses special techniques for the artificial aging of surfaces. It can be scuffs, small cracks and chips. Craquelure varnish, gelatin, PVA glue and even egg yolk can be useful to achieve this goal.

    Golden paints add extra brightness to the pattern on the furniture; using a hair dryer when painting will help to get a blurry image.

    Before starting work, the furniture surface must be cleaned and degreased. To eliminate irregularities, sanding is carried out, scratches and dents are puttied, after which the furniture is covered with a primer. The beginning of painting is started after thorough drying of the treated surface.

    Comment! If the preparatory stage is skipped, the painted image may deteriorate after a short period.

    Art for beginners

    After the preparatory stage, they proceed directly to the design of furniture.

    Using stencils

    Painting with a stencil is the easiest way to transform the interior of a room. Having chosen the option you like from numerous examples, it is initially printed out and then transferred to a thick sheet. An ornament or other image is carefully cut out. Simple and at the same time attractive patterns are presented below:

    The surface of the furniture is initially painted with a background color, usually calm shades are chosen for this purpose. After the paint dries, the stencil is securely fixed to the furniture and the prepared cutouts are filled with brighter paint. The work is carried out with a sponge, so the surface is painted more evenly. It is better to gradually apply several layers to the furniture.

    Depending on the chosen pattern, furniture painting is done in one-color or multi-color. In conclusion, it is recommended to additionally circle the contour of the painting to obtain a brighter image. If the stencil is small, you can use the pattern on several objects, the main thing is to observe moderation in order to avoid oversaturation of the interior with bright colors.

    Decoupage technology

    The essence of the decoupage technique is to fix a pattern made on paper or fabric onto a dense base. It can be small vases and jars or larger furniture. The advantage of decoupage compared to painting with acrylic paints is that it is not necessary to choose a wooden surface for decoration.

    Of great importance in the preparation of materials is the choice of varnish. Depending on the composition, the surface of the furniture can be:

    • semi-matte;
    • matte;
    • with sequins;
    • antique;
    • semi-gloss;
    • glossy.

    To imitate painting, they acquire a special material with a printed pattern. There are the following options for decorating furniture:

    • Napkins. Due to the thin base, working with them is quite difficult. For beginners, it is better to train on small, even surfaces of furniture.
    • Decoupage card printed on rice paper. Due to the denser base and elasticity, it will be a little easier to achieve the effect of painting on furniture.
    • Decoupage cards on plain paper.
    • Prints on photo paper. The advantage of the solution is the ability to order any image that is optimally suited for decorating furniture painting.

    Attention! Regardless of the chosen pattern, the piece of furniture intended for decoupage painting is painted in a white background. The reason for the requirement is simple - before applying, the paper with a pattern is moistened, if the base is colored, the color of the painting will be noticeably distorted. On a white background, the color scheme will remain in its original form.

    Fixing the picture takes place in a different way. Usually, the surface is treated with glue, after drying, paper with a pattern is applied and carefully leveled, achieving a complete absence of bubbles or wrinkles. When the paper dries, the drawing is varnished, which will preserve the integrity of the painting.

    Illustrative examples of painting made using the decoupage technique are shown in the photo:

    Painting with acrylic paints

    A full-fledged painting is more suitable for people who can independently create an interesting picture on furniture. But this is not a prerequisite. A simple drawing in the form of a cherry on a children's chair is quite possible for a beginner to complete.

    Main stages of work:

    • It is better to make a preliminary sketch of the painting on paper in order to choose a harmonious color palette that will blend into the overall interior.
    • Prepare pencils, paints, brushes, varnish and other improvised materials.
    • The outlines of the pattern are applied to the surface of the furniture with a simple pencil without pressure, so that it does not subsequently show through the acrylic paint.
    • First, large elements of the painting are painted, then small details are drawn up.

    Depending on the desired effect, the base coat of paint is allowed to dry or another tone is applied on top, without waiting for complete drying. Photos will help you evaluate the variety of images with which you can decorate furniture:

    Features of painting in various rooms

    When choosing an image, they are guided by the functional purpose of the room and the style of the interior. Most often, painting on furniture is in demand in the Provence style. Natural motifs, all kinds of vegetation and birds are fully consistent with the design concept with a taste of the French province. Painted looks extremely organic. If desired, the furniture in the kitchen can also be painted, although it is easier to turn to the decoupage technique. In addition to flowers, birds and vegetation, there are other interesting compositions.

    The children's room is a space for creativity. For beginners, it is better to choose simple images, these can be fish, colorful numbers and letters. If desired, the child's room will be filled with bunnies, fairies, cars and sailboats. It all depends on the age, gender and preferences of your beloved child.

    For furniture design, you can also choose a neutral theme - geometric shapes, iridescent bubbles, the choice is limited only by your own imagination.

    The kitchen is a suitable place for still lifes. The painting in the form of a tree will look extremely impressive on the furniture, the trunk of which is located on the pencil case, and the branches smoothly pass to the adjacent cabinet.

    Go ahead, and due to the design of the surface of the furniture set, you can transform the interior of the room beyond recognition. The main thing is to take into account the functionality of the room, the overall stylistic decision and not overestimate your own capabilities.

    Updating furniture is a common practice that does not require significant investments and allows you to implement creative author's ideas. This also applies to chests of drawers - perhaps the most functional furniture. The decor of the chest of drawers should be combined with the interior of the living room in which it is located. If you want to accentuate a discreet pastel design, a chest of drawers with an updated print and topped with a vase is a good solution. Another thing is if you need to create the perfect combination of color palettes. A properly decorated old chest of drawers will cope with any task.

    Buying new furniture is not cheap. And the models sold in the post-Soviet space are not always original. Therefore, a master class on upgrading an old chest of drawers is useful for those who want to save money, as well as people with an artistic mindset who gravitate towards everything original. So, how to decorate a chest of drawers with your own hands?

    Updating an old chest of drawers

    Whether it is the restoration of a chest of drawers or the decor of a bedside table with your own hands - everything is done in stages. The first thing you need before starting work is the tools. Here is a list of what is required:

    • small grinder;
    • sandpaper or sanding sponge;
    • stencils;
    • putty knife;
    • unnecessary toothbrush;
    • screwdriver;
    • wood knife;
    • several brushes, different in width and composition of the pile (hard and soft), sponges;
    • masking tape;
    • acetone;
    • industrial film;
    • toothpicks.

    From the materials you need:

    • bulk paste or putty based on acrylic;
    • glue for wooden surfaces;
    • wood varnish, stain or primer with paint of a certain color (for decoupage - three-layer napkins).

    You will also need gloves and a respirator.

    If this is an artistic design, acrylic paint of the desired color will do. For those who want to modernize an old chest of drawers, a good option would be to replace furniture fittings: you can add new handles or mirrored panels.

    Restoration

    But for those who are not afraid of working with sandpaper, a spatula and acrylic paint, a stage-by-stage painted restoration of the chest of drawers has been prepared. The process consists of several steps: removing the old paint or varnish coating, thorough sanding, checking for chips and other irregularities, local filling of defects, painting and final decoration of the chest of drawers.

    But first you should look for defects in the interior of the chest of drawers. All broken bottoms, shelves and rails should be unscrewed with a screwdriver and measured. In accordance with the geometric parameters, you can buy new elements or make them yourself. If the second option is closer to you, be prepared to acquire an additional arsenal of tools and knowledge in the field of thorough furniture repair. Do not forget to do such a check before decorating a chest of drawers with your own hands.

    Also pay attention to the screws, handles and legs. If the fittings are not the same, with differences in shape and pattern, then most likely these elements are made by hand, and if some of them are damaged, the analogue part can no longer be obtained. In this case, it is better to replace all fittings.

    Cleaning and product preparation

    Surface cleaning is done carefully so as not to damage important decorative elements of the product. First, clean the surface by wiping it with soapy water. Use a toothbrush to remove dirt and dust from hard-to-reach places.

    To free the surface of furniture from paint or varnish, you will need industrial film and acetone. Cover the old chest of drawers with the last, and to enhance the effect, cover the product with industrial film. In the absence of a film, you can use oilcloth, cellophane and other improvised materials. Limit the air supply and leave the furniture for one hour. After this time, a layer of varnish and paint will lag behind the wood.

    The decor of a chest of drawers with your own hands begins with work with a construction spatula. Remove loose layer from wood without damaging the surface. Remember to remove all paint.

    Then comes the skinning step.

    The surface free from small decorative elements is polished with a machine. For the latter, it is important to choose the right nozzle. Use sandpaper or a sanding sponge to sand the area of protrusions and small parts. Do not overdo the skinning, so as not to damage the chest of drawers.

    Cracks, chips, scratches and other defects are carefully covered with putty on wood. It is better to give preference to water-based putty. For restoration, putty is selected by color, not by the name of the wood. It should only go into the recesses, so sand the surface again. If traces remain in the structure of the tree, stains will appear when stained with stain, which cannot be removed. Replace bottoms in boxes, skids and strengthen the frame.

    Painting

    The choice of paint, its brand and color depends on how you see the future decor of the old chest of drawers. This can be a stain layer if the wood structure is smooth sanded and looks good without paint. The stain is suitable for changing the color while maintaining the texture of the tree. You can cover the entire surface with acrylic paint, and then the design of the old chest of drawers will become completely different.

    Both stain and paint are applied evenly with brushes or a roller. Works on time are the same: only the results on the fact of drying are different.

    Stages of work:

    • The choice of varnish, paint of the desired color and other materials.
    • Tinting, staining or painting with a brush, roller. Maybe with a rag.
    • A layer of varnish on the entire surface of the furniture. After drying - another layer or two. Can be replaced with transparent primer.
    • Skinning to remove the raised pile of the array.
    • Finishing coats of varnish.
    • Wait until completely dry.

    Design solutions

    The decor of an old nightstand or a do-it-yourself chest of drawers is determined by the style of the interior. You can use wallpaper, lace, choose a floral print, fabric upholstery of drawers, paints or put names, memorable dates on the surface. You can decorate the entire front panel with coffee beans, buttons, beads, beads and other elements. If this is a living room, it is better to use presentable panels in a restrained color, but for a bedroom or a nursery, you are given complete freedom of choice. Decoupage technique, English style, voluminous decor, as well as antique decor do not go out of fashion.

    Bedside tables are updated according to the same principle. But how to decorate a plastic chest of drawers? Decoupage is your best bet. The same work is carried out as above, with the exception of grinding. For plastic, special paints of various colors and primers are provided.

    Decoupage

    How to decorate a chest of drawers using decoupage technique? This is a real expanse for fantasy. Decoupage involves decorating furniture with the help of special cards and three-layer napkins. You also need to get white acrylic paint, PVA glue, scissors, a roller and a sponge. The process begins with the application of paint with a roller on the entire surface of the chest of drawers. Next, start cutting out the desired images. To give an old look after complete drying, you should walk over the product with sandpaper. This must be done carefully, along the lines of the wood.

    Apply PVA glue to all parts to stick them to the chest of drawers. Lubricate the front side of the pictures with the same glue, which will protect them from external influences. If these are flowers or ornate patterns, they can be extended with patterns of lines and curls protruding from the surface of the nightstand.

    Decoupage can also be done with fabric. This will decorate the facade to match the interior.

    English style

    But the design of a chest of drawers with your own hands is not limited to the idea of decoupage. For the English style, an old product is ideal, even if it has noticeable defects. You will need four colors: white, red, blue and brown. The first three are acrylic paint, the last one is oil. Of the materials, putty, spatula, topazure, masking tape, sandpaper, decorative nails, brushes and rollers are also useful.

    The accessories are removed from the chest of drawers, and the product is cleaned. After the surface is covered with an uneven layer of putty: the more casually, the better. Cover the chest of drawers with white paint and mark the areas to be painted with tape. Dilute the scarlet and blue paints. The spotting that may appear during the staining process is only a plus. The tabletop and sides are treated with sandpaper. The finished work is covered with topazure (use a sponge for this). The ideal tone of toplazuri is “walnut”. After that, drive in decorative furniture nails and install fittings darkened with oil brown paint.

    antique

    But how to decorate a chest of drawers with your own hands if it is too old-fashioned? Lovers of country and Provence will appreciate the antique decor. This design is now popular, and you will need the following to work:

    • sandpaper of various grain sizes and hardness;
    • sponge;
    • brushes and screwdrivers;
    • lacquer craquelure;
    • wax candle;
    • 2 colors of acrylic paint.

    Remove hardware, drawers and dresser tops. Treat the entire surface with sandpaper and wipe with a wet sponge. Apply the first coat of paint and leave to dry. The following abrasions will be intentional, and they are done with sandpaper and a candle. Then apply paint of a different shade (to your taste) and wipe with a sponge those areas that were covered with wax: in these places the paint will be erased. The finishing stage is the decoupage technique or author's painting. Then everything is covered with craquelure.

    Getting Started

    Before decorating, it is necessary to remove all handles from the dresser, and wipe it from dust with a damp cloth.

    Next, we take a spatula and smear a thin layer of white putty on the facades of all our drawers, that is, on the visible part of the chest of drawers. It is not necessary to adhere to a uniform puttying of the surface, the board should be textured, and not simple. We smear spots from putty on the board. We are waiting for the putty to dry, and we pass with a roller with white acrylic paint, a semi-dry brush, along the top of the boxes. We seal with masking tape and separate the places that we will paint over in blue and red.

    We take 2 glass jars and make the colors we need. Add blue and red pigments to white acrylic paint. The more pigment, the darker the paint will turn out.

    When stained, we see some spotting - as it should be. We need an unevenly painted surface.

    We paint again, otherwise the color will be too pale. This is how it should turn out.

    Then we take sandpaper, sand the top of the chest of drawers, the side edges, and the corners.

    Then we take a sponge, and begin to rub over the entire surface of the chest of drawers, with the exception of the drawers, walnut-colored topazure. Especially intensively we process the side parts, the corners of the facade, and the top of the chest of drawers. Next, we begin to stuff furniture nails along the facade of our chest of drawers. We make sure that the distance between the nails is the same.

    Then we fasten the handles that we removed at the beginning of work, or others that match the style. We draw with a brush and oil paint around the nails and handles - we make a dark shade. We are finishing work.

    People often throw away old furniture, not because it is broken, but because the old bedside tables, sideboards, or chests of drawers are tired and no longer look beautiful. Often you see discarded furniture made of good wood, and not from modern chipboard and fiberboard. Old furniture undoubtedly deserves to be given a second chance, because it is a value that, in capable hands, turns into a stylish design item. Yes, of course, you will have to make your own hands and diligence, but such decor does not require large material costs, and the work will definitely please you.

    With the help of such a voluminous decor, you can make the decor of the cabinet with your own hands. You can decorate not only a chest of drawers or a bedside table with a volumetric decoration, but also make a buffet decor with your own hands. Next, you will see stencils that may be useful to you in your work.

    For work you will need:

    1. Wooden detail of a nightstand or chest of drawers.
    2. Putty knife.
    3. Stencil plastic or thick cardboard.
    4. Acrylic putty or bulk paste.
    5. White and brown acrylic paint.
    6. Brush or sponge.
    7. Scotch tape.

    Getting Started

    We fix the stencil on the surface of the tree, securing it with tape. We put putty on the stencil, level the surface with a spatula. Then, with both hands, remove the stencil, and leave the work to dry.

    Here we have such a volumetric decor.

    Or another option: after the decorative element has dried, paint the surface with brown acrylic paint, then rub the pattern itself and the surface next to it with a candle.

    Not everyone has the talent of an artist, and not everyone can draw. It is in such cases that stencils can come in handy. We transfer it to cardboard, cut it out, and use stencils for work.

    I won’t reveal a secret if I say that slate (chalk paint) is now very often used for furniture decoration. It lays well, uniformly on the surface, does not require much effort for painting. But the price for it is quite high. Therefore, we want to offer a recipe that will help you make your own chalk paint for decoration.

    Paint composition:

    1. 250 grams of water-based latex or acrylic paint.
    2. 2 tablespoons of regular gypsum (can be taken from the children's kit). Gypsum can be replaced with chalk.
    3. 1 st. a spoonful of hot water.

    Cooking:

    • We take a glass jar, pour 1 tablespoon of hot water into it, then pour gypsum into it, and mix well.
    • Immediately pour paint into this mass (do not wait for the plaster to harden).
    • Mix the resulting mass well. Chalk paint is ready. With this paint you can paint a chest of drawers, and a bedside table, and so on.

    Dresser decor options

    There are many options for decorating: using fabric, acrylic or oil paints, wallpaper remnants, paper, volumetric decor. Even if you just change such a trifle as accessories - buy interesting metal or wooden handles, metal locks with keys in a furniture store, and replace these small details - it can completely change the look of your furniture.
