On August 1, according to the old style (August 14, NS), the Church celebrates three holidays.

The first of them is the Origin (wearing out) of the Honest Trees Life-Giving Cross Lord's. This holiday is the main memory of the day. It has Byzantine roots. The story tells that in the southern country - Byzantine Empire(and especially in populous Constantinople) - just in August, outbreaks of cholera and other infectious epidemics fell, from which many people died. The believer, however, has always sought and still seeks protection in God today. Therefore, on August 1, according to the old style, the Patriarch of Constantinople, together with the clergy (priests) and the emperor himself, carried out from the royal treasury the Holy Tree of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord (exactly the Cross on which the Savior was crucified). And they made a procession through the city so that the Lord would save His people with His Cross and bless His property. Processions with the Tree continued for almost two weeks - until the feast of the Assumption Holy Mother of God. At the same time, prayers for the blessing of water were served, and the inhabitants, streets and houses of Constantinople were generously sprinkled with holy water to expel all uncleanness and sickness.

From Byzantium, together with the Greek clergy, who for a long time headed the church hierarchy in Russia, the holiday passed to us.
This is also the origin of the custom to perform on the morning of the holiday the removal of a cross decorated with flowers from the altar and worship before it. Therefore, on this day, water-blessing prayers and processions are performed in cities and villages.

Interesting is the fact that, according to some sources, Kievan Rus was baptized at the direction of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Vladimir also on August 1. Therefore, in fact, the Baptism of Russia is also remembered on this day. But according to the established modern church tradition, today the Day of the Baptism of Russia is celebrated on July 15 according to the old style (July 28, N.S.) on the day of memory of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir.

Also on August 1 (14) the Feast of the All-Merciful Savior and the Most Holy Theotokos takes place in honor of the heavenly sign of the icons of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Most Pure Virgin Mary and

And, finally, on this day, the day of memory of the seven Maccabean martyrs Avim, Antoninus, Guriy, Eleazar, Evsevon, Alim, Markell, their mother Solomonia and teacher Eleazar is remembered. You can read more about their exploits in Old Testament, in the Second Book of Maccabees, in the sixth and seventh chapters.
Let's recap the history.

In 168 BC, Jerusalem was captured by the Syrian Greek ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who had his capital in Syrian Antioch, named after the Antioch dynasty. Antiochus Epiphanes not only captured the Jewish capital, he unleashed a religious war, as he wanted to Hellenize the region by imposing a pagan religion on the Jews. Confession of faith in the true God was punishable by death. At that time, entire settlements and Jewish tribes were slaughtered, remaining faithful to the religion of their ancestors. The last point that caused the Jewish rebellion against the wicked king was the desecration of the Jerusalem temple. Antiochus turned it into the temple of Zeus and personally slaughtered the sacrificial pig on the altar. Needless to say, this was a special insult to the Jews.

Among the Jews, resistance was organized, primarily against religious oppression. The Jews defended faith in the true God. The fighters for the Old Testament faith and the liberation of the Jewish people from the heavy Hellenic yoke began to be called Maccabees. This is not a surname, but rather a nickname. Translated from the Aramaic language, the word means "hammer against enemies", having in its root the word "maccaba" - "hammer". It is generally accepted that the leader of the Jewish people Judah from the Hasmonean dynasty was the first to receive such a nickname. Known in history as Judas Maccabee.

Accordingly, seven young men: Avim, Antoninus, Guriy, Eleazar, Evsevon, Alim, Markell, their mother Solomonia and teacher Eleazar, who accepted death from King Antiochus for confessing faith in God, also began to be called Maccabees.

Dear brothers and sisters, I would like to call on all of us to study in more depth mentally, heartily, prayerfully, spiritually the history of Orthodox holidays, so as not to fall victim to superstitions that arise for two reasons - due to ignorance and unwillingness to live heartily and spiritually the life of the Church, transforming with God help himself, because of the desire only to come for some consecrated church attribute (willow, water, poppy seeds, honey), not letting Christ through his soul and forgetting for the period until the next consecration about the existence of the Church of God.

It is for these reasons, it seems to me, that some people do not want to know who the holy martyrs of Maccabees are. They assume that there is only an incomprehensible mythical fictional creature "Makovy". And therefore it is necessary to consecrate the poppy in temples. In the human mind, the spiritual holy component of the holiday has turned into a semi-pagan superstition.

Of course, on this holiday, you can consecrate the poppy according to the order from the breviary "Prayer to consecrate any fragrant potion." But, on the one hand, according to the Charter on August 1 (14), only water and honey of the new crop are consecrated. On the other hand, often consecrated poppy is often used for superstitious purposes: they sprinkle a house to protect it from witches, put it in the graves of the dead so that it does not come out and start harming people, as superstitious people believe.

It seems to me that sacrilege occurs in this way: the consecrated thing participates in actions that are actually connected with magic.

The honey of the new crop is consecrated on August 1 (14). This event is not connected with the holidays of this day, but with the natural cycle of nature and the appearance of honey at this particular time. There is a very ancient Old Testament tradition in the Church to consecrate the firstfruits (that is, the first fruits of the earth) and offer them as a sacrifice to God. First of all, out of gratitude for the fact that He gave them to us. This is how the Old Testament speaks of it: “If you offer the Lord a grain offering from the firstfruits, bring it as a gift from your firstfruits from the ears ... this is an offering to the Lord” (Lev. 2:14, 16).

According to this institution, which was given by the Lord to the holy prophet Moses on Mount Sinai, a tradition arose in the Church to consecrate the firstfruits of the fruits of the earth, not only wheat, but also honey, grapes and everything else.

There is also a pious tradition before the consecration of August 1 (14) not to eat the honey of the new harvest. It seems to me that this is simply logical: first, consecrate, having received God's blessing on the product, and then eat it. If only all these prescriptions would serve us as a means of drawing closer to God and cultivating in our souls love for Him and our neighbor. And not vice versa.

On August 1 (14) the Dormition fast begins. What served to establish it? Here is how St. Simeon of Thessalonica writes about this:

“The fast in August (Assumption) was established in honor of the Mother of God's Word, Who, having recognized Her repose, as always labored and fasted for us, although, being holy and immaculate, she had no need for fasting; so especially she prayed for us when she intended to pass from this life to the next, and when her blessed soul had to unite with her Son through the Divine Spirit. Therefore, we must also fast and sing of Her, imitating Her life and thus awakening Her to prayer for us. Some, however, say that this post was established on the occasion of two holidays, that is, the Transfiguration and the Assumption. And I also consider it necessary to remember both of these two feasts, one as giving us sanctification, and the other as propitiation and intercession for us.

The Dormition fast is the shortest of all annual fasts. It begins on August 1 (14) and ends on the feast of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos on August 15 (28). This post is strict. That is, food of animal origin is not tasted at all. Fish can be eaten only once during the Assumption Fast on the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord - August 6 (19).
The monastic Charter prescribes dry eating on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, on Tuesdays and Thursdays - boiled food without sunflower oil, on Saturdays and Sundays - with sunflower oil.

But, dear brothers and sisters, it is necessary for each of us, with God's help, to choose our measure of fasting. Someone may fast according to the monastic Rule, but for someone it is enough to abstain from food of animal origin.

In the prayer for the blessing of honey, read by the priest, there are such good verses: “Unusual in mercy and inexpressible in bounty, Lord Jesus Christ, He is marvelous in glory and works wonders. You, by the action of the Holy Spirit, sometimes blessing Israel and satiating it with honey from a stone ... ”This refers to an event from the Holy History, when the people of Israel, led by the holy prophet Moses, reached the place called Merah (in translation -“ Bitterness ”) and there was bitter water. The people began to murmur. Then God ordered Moses to put the tree into the water, and the water became sweet and drinkable (Isaiah 15:22-26). Perhaps it is no coincidence that on August 1 (14) we receive the sweetness of honey on the feast of the Tree (Cross).

Let us, dear brothers and sisters, remember our main sweetness, which is tastier than any earthly honey - our Lord Jesus Christ. He is the way and the truth and the life. And our souls, if they are like the souls of the people of Israel, who, with the help of the holy prophet Moses, sought God, also seek the Lord in the wilderness of worldly anxieties and will surely find a life-giving spring, sanctified by the Cross and the sweet grace of the Holy Spirit. If only there was a desire to seek this heavenly honey ...

Food with vegetable oil on Wednesday and Friday is allowed only if these days fall in memory of the great saint with an all-night vigil or with a polyeleos service the day before.

Feast of the Origin of the Holy Trees of the Life-Giving Cross

The feast of the origin of the honest trees of the Life-Giving Cross is established as follows. In 1164, the Greek Tsar Manuel and the Russian Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky on the same day to fight: the first against the Saracens, the second against the Kama Bulgarians. Andrei Bogolyubsky, going on a campaign, took with him a holy cross and an icon of the Mother of God, and the priests carried them in front of his troops, performing prayers and sprinkling the army with holy water. The Lord helped Andrei defeat his enemies, and when he returned with a victory, he saw a miraculous phenomenon: from his princely banner with the image of the Savior's icon, it was as if a ray of light was shed on the entire army. The prince wrote about this phenomenon to the Greek emperor Manuel, and he, having also won a victory over his enemies, realized that it was thanks to the help of God, and in grateful remembrance of this help to himself and the Russian prince, he established a holiday. The holiday is named origin, i.e. passing, or carrying the Holy Cross of the Lord, because the wearing of the cross in front of the ranks is remembered Russian troops, and because on this holiday the removal of the cross is laid for worship at the vigil and for the blessing of water at the liturgy. The holiday of August 1/14 is colloquially called the “first Savior”, that is, the first holiday of the Savior this month, since during it there are still two holidays of the Savior: - the second Savior, and - the third Savior.

Honey Spas

August 14 the first of three feasts dedicated to our Savior Jesus Christ, established on the occasion of the signs from the icons of the Savior, the Most Holy Theotokos and Holy Cross during the battles of the holy noble prince Andrei Bogolyubsky with the Volga Bulgars. In addition, the day of August 14 was dedicated to the memory of the seven holy martyrs of Maccabees - Abim, Antoninus, Guriy, Eleazar, Eusenon, Adim and Markell, as well as their mother Solomonia and their teacher Eleazar. On Honey Savior, it was customary to consecrate honey in the church; after the consecration, the beekeepers broke the fast with fresh honey, and also baked pies with millet porridge and honey. In general, strict guardians folk customs and fasters began to eat honey only from that day. The First Spas is the beginning of the Assumption Lent, about which the people said: "Spasovka is a gourmet, and Petrovka () is a hunger strike." In addition to onions, the peasants usually had no other greenery, and many vegetables and fruits already appeared by the Assumption Fast. On the first Savior, wells were sanctified, and religious processions to the water were organized everywhere.

Martyrs of Maccabees: Avim, Antoninus, Guriy, Eleazar, Evsevon, Alim, Markell, their mother Solomonia and teacher Eleazar.

The martyrs of Maccabees: Avim, Antoninus, Guriy, Eleazar, Evsevon, Alim, Markell, their mother Solomonia and teacher Eleazar suffered in the Old Testament time. Shortly before the birth of Christ, the Jews fell under the rule of the Syrian kings, and one of them, Antiochus Epiphanes, began to force the Jews to leave the Jewish law and accept the Greek - pagan. Then many of the Jews stood firm for their faith and law and suffered for it. Such were the Maccabees. Eleazar was a 90-year-old elder respected by everyone for his learning and virtuous life. When the Syrian governor in Jerusalem demanded that he partake of swine meat sacrificed to idols as a sign of renunciation of the law of Moses, Eliazar replied that he would rather die than leave the God of his fathers. He was promised mercy if he even pretended to eat meat offered to idols; but the pious old man said: “I will not shame my gray hair with such hypocrisy and I will not give young men a seductive example. If I get rid of torment from the hand of men, will I get rid of the hand of the Almighty? No, I am going to my death and I will show young people how one should die for the holy law.” And he with courage died under the blows of the executioners. Among many Jews who were firm in their faith, a woman named Solomonia with seven sons was also presented to Antiochus Epiphanes. To force them to accept paganism, Antiochus ordered them to be flogged with whips and ox sinews. But despite the cruel blows of the whips, the eldest of the sons of Solomon with firmness said to the king: "We would rather die than transgress our father's laws." Antiochus was inflamed with anger and ordered to cut off his tongue, cut off his fingers and toes, tear off the skin from his head, then fry him still alive in a frying pan. Other brothers and mother had to look at his torment. After him, the other five brothers were tormented in the same way. They all died with a firm hope of resurrection into eternal life. There was a seventh, the youngest brother. The king, by persuasion and promises, tried to persuade him to renounce the faith, but in vain. Then he ordered his mother to persuade the boy and thereby save at least one of the seven sons for herself. The mother approached her son and said: “My child! I brought you up with such labor and need, not renouncing the God we worship; die like your brothers, so that I may meet you with them in a blessed life.” After listening to his mother, the lad turned to the tormentors and said: “What are you waiting for? Do not think that I will obey you and break the laws given to us through Moses. This will not happen! And you, the king, who caused so much evil to the Jews, will not escape the judgment of God. Amid the most severe torments, you finally recognize that the God of Israel is the only God. Irritated, Epifan subjected the young confessor to the most cruel torments. After him, the valiant Solomonia was also burned. The holy Maccabees suffered in 166 BC.

Nine Martyrs Leontius, Attius, Alexander, Kindei, Minsitheum, Cyriacus, Mineon (Minea), Katun and Eucleus came from Pamphylian Perga and suffered during the persecution from Diocletian. Mineon was a carpenter, and all the rest were farmers. At night they destroyed the temple of the goddess Artemis. For this they were cruelly tortured, and finally they were thrown to the wild beasts, but the wild beasts did not touch them. Then they cut off their heads.
