The United Arab Emirates is an unusual country that attracts tourists. Dubai enjoys well-deserved popularity, which offers vacationers not only the cleanest beaches, but also chic entertainment and shopping complexes. Rest will not be spoiled if you follow certain rules of conduct for tourists in Dubai. For violation of these simple rules may be fined or even arrested. Therefore, tourists before traveling to the United Arab Emirates need to find out what these rules of conduct prohibit.

United Arab Emirates for tourists - etiquette in the Emirates

In the UAE, as in other Muslim countries, a number of prohibitive rules have been adopted related to the clothing and behavior of tourists on the beach and in the city. Before the trip, it is useful to learn how to communicate with local residents, get acquainted with the restrictions for Europeans in Ramadan, the month of obligatory fasting for Muslims. A tourist should inquire about the attitude towards alcohol and drugs in the UAE. Holidays in Dubai will be calm and comfortable if you respect the customs of this country and do not forget about certain things.

It is forbidden to wear overly revealing clothes

The UAE is a Muslim country with strict religious norms. Tourists in the Emirates are expected to behave decently, so it is necessary to adhere to certain rules when choosing clothes.

Most of the prohibitions are related to. For local women in the UAE, there is a ban on defiant, transparent, tight-fitting clothing, these rules of conduct apply to tourists as well.

It is indecent to show naked arms and legs, shoulders and stomach. Clothing should be loose, completely covering the body from the neck to the knees.

In Dubai, the coastline, on which the city beaches are located, stretches for several kilometers. Everywhere showers, changing rooms, toilets. The place is crowded. During a holiday in Dubai, you can not sunbathe and swim naked and topless. On some municipal beaches, women are not allowed to appear in bathing suits. But on the beach of the hotel, tourists can wear everything: swimwear, pareos, miniskirts, shorts.

Show respect for the locals, do not appear on the streets of the city in clothes for the beach or sports. For shopping, entertainment centers you need to choose more modest clothes. This may be a special local costume - an abaya that hides the whole body. Men also do not need to bare their shoulders and knees; breeches and T-shirts without defiant inscriptions and drawings are suitable for the city. Violators of these rules are waiting for impressive fines, and in exceptional cases - arrest.

It is forbidden to show feelings in public

In the United Arab Emirates, there is a ban on the manifestation of one's feelings in public. Dubai is a progressive emirate, so it does not have such strict rules. Often they turn a blind eye to the fact that a married couple walks holding hands. But with those tourists who cannot contain their feelings and begin to hug and kiss in public, the police will talk about violations of public morality. Repeated notice may result in a fine.

Strict punishment under the law of the country follows the cohabitation of a man with a man. Therefore, in Dubai, for the public manifestation of homosexual feelings, you can earn a prison term of up to 10 years.

Alcohol and everything related to it

Drinking alcohol in the emirate of Sharjah is strictly prohibited. Tourists in Dubai can afford to drink in a hotel room, restaurant or bar. Drinking drinks in other places is prohibited.

You should keep yourself in hand. For scandalous behavior while intoxicated, severe punishment follows - an impressive fine. Tourists are not allowed to appear on the street drunk.

In the UAE, you cannot freely buy alcohol in a store. The sale of alcohol is prohibited in public places; in specialized stores, alcoholic beverages can only be purchased by holders of a special license, which is not available to tourists. It remains to use the services that have an appropriate license in the Emirates for the sale of alcohol. And also buy alcohol at inflated prices in bars. If you drive while intoxicated, then in the UAE you will be sentenced to a large fine or a month in prison.

It is forbidden to use drugs

The most stringent rules of conduct for tourists who come to the United Arab Emirates relate to the sale, purchase and use of drugs.

One suspicion of the distribution of narcotic drugs is enough for a death sentence. In the UAE, even medicines prescribed by a doctor or confectionery poppy are equated to drugs.

Tourists should refrain from smoking in public places. The hotels have special areas for smokers with warning signs. You can stay both on the floor for smokers and non-smokers.

Communication with local residents

It is important for tourists visiting the UAE to remember that in a Muslim country it is considered an insult to stare at local women. An attempt to speak or joke with a Muslim woman will result in a very large fine.

When talking with a local man, a neutral topic is chosen, for example, you can ask about his family. When meeting a Muslim, you need to give your right hand and be sure to look intently into the eyes. If it is customary to shake hands with a man, then this is categorically unacceptable with a local woman.

When communicating with local residents, the tourist must remain respectful and polite. You should not touch the interlocutor with your hands, because this may offend a resident of the United Arab Emirates.

It is forbidden to take pictures in the UAE

You need to be careful about taking pictures in the UAE. Not all sights can be freely filmed on camera. Photographing is considered a sin by some believers. Therefore, you should not photograph local men without warning, it is better to first ask a Muslim for permission.

Filming Muslim women on camera is offensive to local residents; for a photo of a woman, you can end up in prison for 3 days. Tourists taking pictures in the market or in the store need to be careful not to accidentally get a local woman in the frame.

In Ramadan

important religious holiday in the United Arab Emirates is considered the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, the behavior of tourists is subject to even stricter rules, especially Sharjah, the most conservative emirate in the UAE. In this state, Muslim holidays are celebrated with particular rigor, without making any concessions to tourists.

In Ramadan, Muslims drink and eat only after sunset. Tourists are also prohibited from drinking water or eating food in public places. A strict "dry law" is introduced, entertainment venues and shops open only at night. Disrespect for religious customs is punishable by a fine or arrest.

In public transport

It is necessary to know that both local residents and tourists in the subway, buses or taxis in the UAE chewing gum is forbidden and also eat and drink.

Men are not allowed to enter carriages for women with small children. These special carriages are marked with signs Pink colour. A married couple of tourists for a trip can choose a shared car.

Tourists should not speak loudly on the phone while traveling in public transport. Each violation of the rules in the UAE is accompanied by significant fines.

Profanity and jokes

Tourists vacationing in the UAE must refrain from rude statements, insults towards local residents. Arabs understand English well, so they will be able to recognize profanity. For obscene gestures and obscene language, you can get a serious prison term of up to 7 years.

We keep cleanliness

In the UAE, cleanliness and order are carefully monitored. Tourists are expected to respect local traditions. A large fine for garbage thrown in the wrong place is the norm for Dubai.

The UAE welcomes guests who respect the traditions and laws of this eastern country. Knowledge and observance of generally accepted standards will make your stay in the UAE resorts comfortable and safe.

When going to work abroad, it is important to know the peculiarities of the local labor law UAE - this will help you avoid unpleasant consequences and problems with immigration law. This is especially true for the United Arab Emirates, since local labor legislation, due to age-old customs and traditions, has its own specifics. Let's try to figure it out in order.

Regulatory Framework for Employment Law in the Emirates

The regulatory framework of the labor legislation of the Emirates was laid down in the early 80s, and since then has been constantly improved and supplemented in accordance with changes in the requirements of the labor market. Specialized economic zones in Dubai and other Emirates have a special status, the number of which is growing every year. These are separate state territories that offer significant benefits for international business activities.

The territory of the specialized economic zones of the UAE is distinguished by special tax, labor and customs state regulation. So, for example, in certain economic zones (Dubai Financial Center, Jebel Ali), labor legislation has some differences from the general federal norms.

In general, it can be noted that the labor legislation of the United Arab Emirates is based on international experience and meets the basic requirements of international labor relations. At the same time, local labor legislation has characteristic differences that are inherent only in countries with a Muslim state system.

Foreign labor force in the UAE

Hiring a foreign work force involves the provision of a special period for issuing a work visa and the corresponding work permit. During this time, a foreign worker must conclude a contract with the employer, as well as receive a resident visa and a work card.

Persons holding a tourist visa to the UAE or a visa for transit stay in the country are not entitled to labor activity on the territory of the country. Violation of these requirements may result in liability, provided by law United Arab Emirates, both for the employee and the employer.

Important: When heading to work in the UAE, you must remember that here the law has a high priority, and government bodies strictly enforce the current legislation.

Grounds for hiring a foreign worker

The basis for the employment of foreign citizens is the relevant labor contract between a foreign citizen and an employer. The form of this document was developed by the UAE Ministry of Labor. The employment contract is drawn up in two languages, respectively in Arabic and English.

Concluding a contract and obtaining a work visa is the basis for a foreign employee to undergo a mandatory medical examination for health. After a positive conclusion of the medical commission, a residence permit and a work card are finally issued for a foreign worker.

Residence visa and separate conditions

The residence visa is valid for two or three years, but it can be terminated early. A residence visa can be canceled in case of termination of an employment contract, deportation of a foreign worker, stay outside the state for more than six months without a break, etc.

The residence visa in the UAE provides foreign workers with the following opportunities:

  • The right to legal residence, entry and exit outside the country (subject to working conditions);
  • The right to rent real estate;
  • The right to acquire ownership and registration of movable property in the UAE (in accordance with the rules of UAE law, for example, registration Vehicle on employees, etc.).

As a rule, travel expenses, registration labor card, work visa and residence permit are covered by the employer in the UAE.

Consequences of early termination of the employment contract

If the employment contract is terminated early on the initiative of the employer, all information will be entered into the central database of the Ministry of Labor. And to a foreign citizen as a party labor agreement a six-month restriction on employment may be applied. That is why, when concluding an employment contract with one company, you should not expect that in the future you can simply quit and change jobs.

Probation

If you arrived in the Emirates on a work visa, your probationary period should not exceed six months. Foreign citizens should remember that the labor legislation of Dubai and other Emirates expressly states that during probationary period a negligent employee may be fired without prior notice. As a basis for dismissal, there may be a discrepancy with the position held and other factors.

Working hours and holidays in the UAE

UAE labor law provides for a maximum eight-hour working day for adult workers, respectively, per week, this is 48 hours. At the same time, in certain market segments, such as hotel complexes, restaurants and shopping centers, the working day can be extended by one hour. One day a week, employees are entitled to a day off, most often it is Friday. For government employees and employees of some private companies, there are two official days off (Saturday and Friday).

Overtime work is paid extra, on average such payment is - payment at regular hourly rates, plus 125 percent on top. If a person works between 9 pm and 4 am, he can count on an increase in hourly pay (150%) or an additional day off.

Paid holidays

Every employee is guaranteed an annual salary labor leave, up to 30 calendar days. Annual labor leave is granted after the end of the year of work. If the employee has worked for more than six months, the vacation period is calculated according to the following scheme - two days of vacation are added for each month worked.

Official holidays in the UAE

Regardless of the legal form and ownership of companies and enterprises, there are calendar dates recognized as official holidays and days off, in particular:

  • Muslim New Year - 1 day;
  • UAE Independence Day - 1 day;
  • New Year - 1 day;
  • Waqf and Eid Al Adha - 3 days;
  • Eid Al Fitr - 2 days;
  • The birthday of the prophet Mohammed is 1 day.

On public holidays, employees are paid wages. And after six months (probationary period), the employee can issue a paid certificate of incapacity for work. By sick leave payment is made as follows: the first 15 days the salary is kept in full, and the next 30 days 50% of the salary is paid wages, further sick leave is not paid. Confirmation of incapacity for work is the conclusion of the medical commission and the corresponding official certificate.

Medical insurance and conditions for termination of an employment contract in Dubai and other Emirates

Emirati citizens have a mandatory medical policy, however, medical insurance is not directly provided for foreign workers federal laws. At the same time, some Emirates (Abu Dhabi) oblige employers to insure foreign workers and members of their families staying in the Emirates. At the same time, in other Emirates, a reform is also currently underway, obliging employers to provide compulsory health insurance to employees.

Opportunities for termination of employment and termination of the contract largely depend on the type of contract concluded. If the concluded labor contract is fixed-term, termination before the end of the term is permissible subject to the terms of the contract, an open-ended contract may be terminated at the initiative of one of the parties to the contract. The legislation provides that a party must notify the other party of the termination of the contract 30 calendar days before the proposed event.

For persons with a two-year continuous experience, and also in the case when the contract is terminated by mutual agreement of the parties, on the basis of the relevant order of the Ministry of Labor, the six-month restriction on employment in another company does not apply.

In cases where the contract is canceled due to gross violations of labor laws or the terms of the employment contract, the restriction on employment in the Emirates may be up to one year.

Resolution of emerging labor disputes

Labor legislation restricts workers from holding various strikes, strikes and protests. The creation of trade union organizations is also prohibited. All arising disputes on labor relations are considered by the Immigration Service and the Ministry of Labor of the UAE. For those who disagree with the decision, there is an opportunity to appeal decision in the courts.

Conclusion

The UAE labor market is ready to offer foreign citizens a wide range of vacancies. It should be noted that in the Emirates there is always a need for personnel of various specialties, this is due to large-scale projects that are implemented annually in the UAE. Large staffing needs exist in the hotel and tourism sector, construction, management and trade, entertainment and recreation. Among foreign workers, knowledge of languages, experience and professionalism are especially valued

In this article, we will try to tell you in detail about how to behave in the UAE, what is prohibited and what is allowed, how to communicate with the locals and how not to make problems for yourself during the holidays and the rest of your life.

In the UAE, most of the prohibitions, due to the official religion of the country, are associated with the use of alcohol. Muslims are prohibited from drinking alcohol. But, despite this, non-Muslim tourists, unlike more strict countries (for example, Saudi Arabia), in the United Arab Emirates have several options regarding alcohol consumption: firstly, you can bring alcohol with you (for example, buy at Duty Free upon arrival ), while remembering that this should not be done in public places and in front of Muslims; secondly, alcohol is sold in bars and restaurants that have the appropriate license for this. But in a state of intoxication it is strictly forbidden to appear on the streets of the city and public places. The sale of alcohol in bars and restaurants in the UAE is prohibited to persons under 21, so you should carry a copy of your passport or other document confirming your age with you. Remember that the emirate of Sharjah, unlike the rest, is completely alcohol-free. Strangely, it is also forbidden to transport alcohol from emirate to emirate, it can pass for smuggling, despite the fact that there are no cordons and checkpoints between the emirates that could control this.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan Muslims from dawn to dusk do not drink or eat anything, they are also forbidden to smoke and chew gum. Non-Muslims should respect the religious traditions and feelings of Muslims and try not to eat, drink or smoke in public places, refrain from noisy entertainment and indecent behavior in the UAE. It is advisable to wear closed and dim clothing. Failure to follow these simple rules of conduct in the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan may result in administrative and even criminal liability. During Ramadan, as a sign of respect for non-Muslim tourists, there are bars and restaurants at hotels where you can eat and drink during the day.

Access to almost everything mosques UAE non-Muslims are prohibited. The only exceptions are tourist visits to the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi during the allotted hours and the Jumeirah Mosque

Again, due to religion, there are a number of rules of conduct for tourists who come to the Emirates. When interacting with the locals show respect and courtesy, do not touch people, do not stroke children on the head, do not stare at local women, keep your distance.

When entering an Arab house, take off your shoes, first greet the elder, then in a circle with everyone present, do not give alcohol or pork products to a Muslim, try to give and not take everything right hand (left hand considered dirty in the Muslim world), do not sit with your feet facing a Muslim, European women should not be the first to give a hand to a Muslim man, do not interfere with those praying during prayer.

Gambling, prostitution and drugs are completely prohibited in the Emirates. IN last years Western influence also affected smoking ban in public places, enclosed spaces and on the beaches.

Photographing Muslim women are unacceptable - this is considered an insult and can lead to arrest for 3 days. Therefore, one must be careful when shooting in shops, markets - where ladies often go. Before photographing a Muslim man, it is better to ask him for permission. It is also strictly forbidden in the UAE to photograph the palaces of sheikhs, military facilities and structures.

Rules of conduct on the road in the UAE do not differ significantly from Russian ones. Everything is like everywhere else: do not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, fasten your seat belt, do not talk on your mobile, do not exceed speed limits. If, as a result of an accident, the car interferes with the passage of other vehicles, it must be removed.

If, due to some circumstances, you are forced to conduct a dialogue with representatives of the UAE authorities, in no case don't offer a bribe! This may cause irreversible consequences for you.

In the interests of security in the UAE, bathe in forbidden places and with black flags raised (danger warning), go into the desert without a guide, touch and kill wild animals, pluck plants and damage corals. Also, we do not recommend taking in the UAE pets. Almost all hotels in the UAE refuse to accommodate pets, even if they small size and not at all dangerous to society.

The rules of conduct for tourists in the UAE also prohibit men and women show your feelings in public, kiss, hug. Under the law of the country, the cohabitation of an unmarried man and woman is also prohibited. Of course, hotels often turn a blind eye to tourists who are in a civil marriage. But, if a tourist has a holiday romance with a local resident, then, most likely, it will not end in anything good (remember that the local gentleman may turn out to be an employee of the "vice police"). Due to religion, it is also prohibited in the UAE to display homosexual tendencies men and women, despite the fact that among the locals it is quite normal for two friends to walk by the hand or a greeting in which both men rub their noses.

Since the question How to dress in the Emirates”is very voluminous, we have highlighted it in a separate article, which you can read on this one.

At the moment of greeting, the Arabs use a handshake, but be prepared for the fact that it is longer than we are used to. By the way, when you say goodbye, the ritual should be repeated. With friends and people who are dear, a two-handed handshake is used. Meanwhile, all these rules apply mainly to men. For it is not customary for Arab women to shake hands first, a handshake is permissible only in case of initiative from women.
Regardless of which of the local residents and for what period of time you came, in the UAE it is customary to treat guests with at least drinks (tea, coffee, non-alcoholic chilled aperitifs). You can’t refuse treats, otherwise the owner will think that you are offended by him or take such a step as disrespect.
Since you understand that you will have to taste something, then get ready for what drinks you can offer. Coffee in the Emirates has been elevated to the rank of cult drink, it is drunk several times a day and brewed in a special way - of course, by hand. Then they are poured into small bowls - cups without a handle. Tea is also served in similar dishes, often black with mint or green with herbs. As a rule, drinks are brought to the table already moderately sweet, but without cream or milk.
When you enter an Arab house, it is customary to take off your shoes. While sitting, the soles should not be directed towards the owners, this position is considered offensive to the locals.
It is customary for Arabs to pass and receive both drink and food exclusively with the right hand.

If you want to show respect for the inhabitants of the Emirates, then follow the rules of the wardrobe. For walking along the city streets, men are not recommended to wear shorts and a T-shirt, and women are not recommended to wear clothes with an open stomach, back, neckline, mini skirts or see-through dresses. Even if you dressed inappropriately, you may not be reprimanded in a hotel, shopping center or restaurant, but near mosques, in the subway and residential areas, you may be approached with a warning.

After 2 verbal warnings, a fine of about $100 may follow. As for mosques, here, fortunately, those who come are offered temporary clothes: abayas for women ( Long Dresses), men - special long shirts. Meanwhile, for example, in Dubai, the dress code is not so strict, here tourists are treated more loyally.
As for beachwear, topless sunbathing is not allowed in the Emirates. Exposing the chest is considered not only a violation, but also a corrupting act. Nudists in the UAE are also not tolerated, which is good, you can end up behind bars.

In the Emirates, it is not customary to kiss on the street, passionately hugging in crowded places, and even more so to do something more serious in the direction of a romantic relationship. Even a girl sitting on a guy's lap is a gross violation of law and order. For such actions, they can be punished, for example, with a 10-day voyage behind bars. Exceptions to said rules can only be done in nightclubs (clubs, discos) and bars at hotels.
If you travel by public transport, keep in mind that there are exclusively women's carriages and places only for women with babies. Men are not allowed to enter these zones, and it doesn’t really matter which country you come from. If you prefer to move side by side with your soul mate, then simply choose areas for common use in transport.

However, there is good news for lovers: couples can walk hand in hand. Not only that, local romantics do the same. Lovers who do not arrive in an official marriage are allowed to live in one room, local law enforcement agencies delicately and understandingly “turn a blind eye” to such details.
As you understand, it’s better not to flirt with local residents, frivolous love relationship Muslims are not welcome.
Moreover, it is not recommended to start a conversation with Arab ladies on your own initiative - even if you have a tragedy, such actions can be regarded by local law enforcement officers as sexual harassment.

As you know, Muslims are a non-drinking people. Meanwhile, our tourists, accustomed to liberties in Turkey and Egypt, sometimes do not believe that in others Arab countries they can be infringed in alcohol matters. Meanwhile, having arrived in the Emirates, you will understand that everything is quite serious here - alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Of course, there are exceptions for non-Muslim travelers, but also with a lot of conventions, which it doesn’t hurt to know about before the trip.
Let's start with the fact that tourists should not abuse alcohol on board an aircraft flying to the UAE. Otherwise, you risk returning to your homeland without setting foot on Arab soil outside the airport. Despite the fact that 1 liter of spirits and 2 liters of wine can be freely imported into the country, it is forbidden to transport them in public transport or openly carry them in public places. Meanwhile, in different emirates, the severity of alcohol consumption varies. So, for example, if in Sharjah they actually don’t sell alcohol anywhere and strictly punish for appearing in public in a state of “under the fly”, then in Dubai, for example, you can safely savor your favorite alcohol in a hotel bar or in a hotel room. Meanwhile, if you go out into the street in a tipsy state, then you will be unhappy, you may pay a fine, receive a warning, or even go to jail. And what about those who were at a disco or in a restaurant at another hotel and “took on their chest” a little? Just calmly and quietly walk to the exit and immediately get into a taxi, return to your place of residence without incident. Do not try to get behind the wheel of a rented car while drunk; you risk paying a fine of about $ 5,000.
By the way, do not try to present our legendary vodka or other strong treats (regardless of where they come from) as a gift to local residents, such surprises are not welcome here.

It is not allowed to photograph Arab women in the UAE. In general, some Muslims consider the process of photographing a sin (haram). So avoid taking pictures of men, especially those with a bright appearance, in national clothes, with a beard. It is possible that you will come across a strict Muslim who will feel offended.
Public buildings and government agencies are also prohibited from filming, these actions can be equated with espionage. It is not customary to photograph mosques, as well as people performing prayers.
Not all beaches allow you to take pictures even of yourself or your family. If you see a prohibition sign, don't risk it. Meanwhile, the desire to capture yourself on the sand "as a keepsake" can be realized on other beaches, where it is allowed.

It is not customary to speak loudly on the phone on the streets and in public places of the Emirates.
In the process of talking with local Arabs, it is not recommended to ask questions about the wife, meanwhile, you can ask about the family of the interlocutor as a whole.
It is not necessary to carry the original passport with you, a copy of the passport and visa is sufficient. The originals are best kept in a hotel safe.
Do not try to bribe the local police - this is considered a crime, it is possible that even more serious than what they tried to punish you for.
Fighting, cursing (believe me, the local police have already studied all the colorful Russian curses) and showing obscene gestures in the Emirates is strictly prohibited - a fine of $ 1,000 or even 7 years of "rest" behind bars can be imposed for this.
For some violations, you may be permanently banned from entering the country. Moreover, changing your passport will not help in this matter, because at the entrance they do a retinal scan, so in the event of deportation for violations, you will never be able to visit the Emirates again.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the UAE are very good-natured and hospitable people, and their sincerity is natural, because the locals, as a rule, are wealthy people, regardless of the income that tourism brings to the country.

Now that you know all the intricacies of staying in the country, your vacation will be "correct", comfortable and interesting.
